Over 56,000 or 1 in 5 households in Suffolk are estimated to be in fuel poverty with an average of over 400 “excess winter deaths” a year according to NHS Suffolk.

With over half the households in Suffolk not on mains gas and many low income families and older people currently on expensive monthly oil top up schemes   (which according to evidence collected by Suffolk ACRE, can be as much as 10p a litre more expensive)   we have,  as a charity, set up a community oil buying group.

The scheme works by local community volunteers finding out each month which members need oil and passing the information to Suffolk ACRE who, with other charities across England, negotiate the best price on one massive order.

Over 500 people have already joined the scheme saving on average 5p a litre or £50 on a 1000 litre order, but we know we are not reaching many vulnerable people in isolated rural areas and those that do not have internet access. These are precisely the people we want to help and often the households at greatest risk of illness or early death due to cold homes.

There is a small annual fee of £20 for each household joining the Suffolk ACRE group oil buying scheme but in appreciation of helping, volunteer co-ordinators are invited to join for free.

To join the scheme if you live in Saxtead and use heating oil, go to www.communitybuying.org.uk and fill in the form online. The ordering deadlines can be found by clicking on the Suffolk ACRE Community Buying Oil Ordering Deadlines document at the left of this window.

You don't have to have email to join the scheme but it helps! Contact Graham Ward (see above) and enquire.

Also if you live outside Saxtead you can still join the scheme, even if there is no scheme coordinator in your area and even if you don't have email. Just go to www.communitybuying.org.uk and fill in the form online.

Volunteers Needed to Help Vulnerable People Stay Warm

We are writing to ask if you could help us find a volunteer from your community who could spare a couple of hours a month to help people in your community, especially older people and those on low incomes stay warm this winter, whilst at the same time gaining some benefit for themselves.

These are precisely the people we want to help and often the households at greatest risk of illness or early death due to cold homes.

This is why we are now looking for more volunteers to help spread the word and co-ordinate orders.

Volunteers do not have to deal with any money or payments; the role is about talking to local people and passing on the orders.

There is a small annual fee of £20 for each household joining the Suffolk ACRE group oil buying scheme but in appreciation of helping, volunteer co-ordinators are invited to join for free.

If you think you, or some one you know, might be interested in becoming a volunteer co-ordinator to help residents in your village, or joining the scheme, please do not hesitate to contact us on 01473 345300 or email oil@communitybuying.org.uk. Further information about the scheme and the role of co-ordinator is also available at www.communitybuying.org.uk

Attached is an article for your local parish newsletter or magazine, which we would very much appreciate you passing on to the editor as soon as possible. We have also attached a poster for display in village locations; however, we recognise that printing may be an issue, so we will also be sending this letter and copies of the poster to you in the post next week.

Thank you very much for your support.

Kind regards

Natalie
